Fairy Pokémon Weaknesses and Counters in Pokémon Go

Fairy Pokémon are one of the strongest types in Pokémon Go because they have only one real weakness (Ground Pokémon). Their attacks are boosted by Rainy Weather, so expect to see a lot of other trainers using them if the weather predicts! This guide will help you get through the toughest battles against any type of Fairy Pokémon, including some of the strongest combinations!

Fairy Pokémon Weaknesses and Counters in Pokémon Go

One of the first things you need to know about choosing the right counters in Pokémon Go is that not all Pokémon are created equal. There is no one-size-fits-all against them. With each sub-type, moveset, and specialty comes the suggestion of a different technique to counter it. That being said, we’re going to cover a couple of things in this guide.

  • Fairy-type Weaknesses & Strengths: This will cover the basic resistances, weaknesses, vulnerabilities, and strengths that Fairy Pokémon have. This will be the go-to list to reference when battling Fairy-type Pokémon, but not always.
  • Combination Fairy-type Weaknesses & Strengths: This part of the guide will cover the secondary types that Fairy Pokémon can have and put particular emphasis on secondary types that might alter their original Weaknesses & Strengths. It is crucial information to know if you’d like to know how to beat some of the strongest Fairy Pokémon.
  • Counters: In this last section of the guide, we will cover the counters for Fairy Pokémon and their sub-types. It will focus primarily on the Fairy Pokémon with sub-types that alter the normal Weaknesses & Strengths. This will be your reference for the best counters against Fairy Pokémon, and, if possible, all the sub-types.
  • Weaknesses and Strengths

The dynamics for Fairy Pokémon have no relation to real-life science to compare. They’re weak against Poison and Steel, and resistant to Flying, Bug, Dragon, and Dark attacks. Still, there are additional stats to know about Fairy-type Pokémon and Attacks. The list below provides the basic damage effectiveness against their respective types. If anything is not listed, it can be assumed that it applies standard damage/defense.

    • Attacking
      • Super Effective Against (160% Damage): Fighting, Dragon, Dark
      • Not Very Effective Against (62.5% Damage): Fire, Poison, Steel
    • Defending
      • Weak Against (160% Damage): Poison, Steel
      • Strong Against (62.5% Damage): Fighting, Bug, Dark
      • Immune Against (<35% Damage): Dragon

    Combination Weaknesses and Strengths

Sometimes when Pokémon have secondary types, the Weaknesses & Strengths of that type might negate, amplify, or add to the Weaknesses & Strengths of the Pokémon’s primary type. In this list, we’re going to cover specifically the sub-types that change the original Weaknesses & Strengths.

    • Amplifying
      • Amplifies Weakness to Poison: Grass
      • Amplifies Weakness to Steel: Ice, Rock
    • Negating
      • Negates Weakness to Poison: Poison, Ground, Rock, Ghost, Steel
      • Negates Weakness to Steel: Fire, Water, Electric
      • Negates Resistance to Fighting: Normal, Ice, Rock, Dark, Steel
      • Negates Resistance to Bug: Grass, Psychic, Dark
      • Negates Resistance to Dark: Psychic, Ghost

    Counters

The best way to counter any Pokémon is to know its weaknesses and strengths, which are listed in the previous two sections of the guide. However, as mentioned before, some of these weaknesses and resistances can be altered with sub-types. So the question is: What do you do if the Pokémon has multiple types? Well, find another counter, of course!

We’re going to cover a few things with the lists below. First, we’ll explain how to counter against basic Fairy Pokémon. Then, we’ll list the best counters for all the sub-types of Fairy Pokémon.

    Best Fairy Counters

For Fairy Pokémon with no additional sub-types, you’ll want to use Poison and Steel attacks and avoid Fighting, Bug, Dragon, and Dark attacks. Note, these advantages do not mean you should counter or avoid countering with those types of Pokémon, but with those types of attacks specifically.

Since Poison and Steel Pokémon are both effective against Fairy Pokémon and resistant to Fairy attacks, Poison and Steel Pokémon should be considered your standard roster against a trainer who specializes in Fairy Pokémon.

    Best Sub-type Counters

Since Fairy Pokémon have four weaknesses, trainers may use counters that negate them. While this can be an advanced technique to use against other unsuspecting trainers, we must remember that each type has its own weaknesses and strengths. This means that while some sub-types might negate a weakness, it could amplify other weaknesses or add new ones. The list below explains all the best counters for every sub-type of Fairy Pokémon. Remember, as stated above, the standard roster against Fairy Pokémon is Poison and Steel.

    • Fairy + Ice: Ice Pokémon are weak against Steel Pokémon, so combining these two types makes them especially vulnerable to Steel attacks. Use these if you’re fighting a Fairy + Ice Pokémon.
    • Fairy + Dragon: The Dragon type only adds to Fairy’s weaknesses and doesn’t influence their strengths. It would be best to use the standard roster against Fairy + Dragon Pokémon.
    • Fairy + Grass: Ice Pokémon are weak against Poison Pokémon, so combining these two types makes them especially vulnerable to Poison Attacks. Use these if you’re fighting a Fairy + Grass Pokémon.
    • Fairy + Fighting: The Fighting-type does not cancel out Fairy’s weaknesses, and instead just adds to them. It’s best to use the standard roster in this situation, but you can also try one of Fighting’s weaknesses like Flying or Psychic to limit attack options.
    • Fairy + Dark: Adding the Dark-type does not largely affect Fairy weaknesses. The standard roster would be good against Fairy + Dark Pokémon.
    • Fairy + Poison: Poison Pokémon cancel out Fairy’s weakness to Poison, so don’t use them like you normally would. Instead, use a Steel Pokémon since they’re immune to Poison attacks.
    • Fairy + Ground: Ground Pokémon cancel out Fairy’s weakness to Poison, so it’s best not to use them. Steel still does decent damage, but they’re weak against ground attacks. It’s best to use one of Ground’s weaknesses against Fairy + Ground, such as Water, Grass, or Ice. Grass is probably the best of these since it is resistant to Ground attacks.
    • Fairy + Normal: Adding the Normal type cancels out Fairy’s resistance to Fighting Pokémon, but we strongly recommend sticking to the standard roster against Fairy + Normal Pokémon.
    • Fairy + Fire: Fire Pokémon cancel out Fairy’s weakness to Steel, so avoid using them. Since Poison is typically combined with Grass or Bug, we also recommend avoid Poison Pokémon. In this situation, it’s best to use a Fire weakness such as Water or Rock.
    • Fairy + Flying: The Flying-type does not cancel out Fairy’s weaknesses, and instead just adds to them. It’s best to use the standard roster in this situation, but you can also try one of the Flying weaknesses like Electric, Ice, or Rock.
    • Fairy + Psychic: Psychic Pokémon are weak against Ghost attacks, but we recommend sticking to the standard roster in this situation. Only use one of Psychic’s weaknesses if a Poison or Steel Pokémon is not available.
    • Fairy + Bug: The Bug-type does not cancel out Fairy’s weaknesses, and instead just adds to them. Still, Poison Pokémon are resistant to both Fairy and Bug attacks, so they’re the best option against Fairy + Bug Pokémon.
    • Fairy + Rock: Rock Pokémon are weak against Steel Pokémon, so combining these two types makes them especially vulnerable to Steel attacks. Use these if you’re fighting a Fairy + Rock Pokémon.
    • Fairy + Ghost: Ghost Pokémon cancel out Fairy’s weakness to Poison. It adds a weakness to other Ghost Pokémon, but they are weak against a Fairy + Ghost Pokémon’s Ghost attacks. The best type to use against these Pokémon are Steel-types.
    • Fairy + Water: Water Pokémon cancel out Fairy’s weakness to Steel. Your best options in this circumstance would be to use a Grass and/or Poison Pokémon.
    • Fairy + Steel: These Pokémon are considered the strongest combination type in the Pokémon Universe. Adding Steel completely changes Fairy’s weaknesses and strengths (and Steel is immune to Poison), so ignore the standard roster for Fairy + Steel Pokémon. The best counters against Fairy + Steel are Fire and Rock Pokémon. Combining the two would be best, but play use a Fire Pokémon if you’re going on the offense and a Ground Pokémon if you’re playing Defensive.
    • Fairy + Electric: Electric Pokémon cancel out Fairy’s weakness to Steel. Your best options in this circumstance would be to use a Ground Pokémon if you’re playing Defense or a Poison Pokémon if you’re playing Offense.

With this guide, you should be ready to take down any Fairy-type focused opponent! In summary, you’ve likely made the realization that the best Pokémon and Attacks to use will probably be Steel-type. Never bring a Dragon Pokémon to a Fairy fight!
